NCK symposium Building with Mud
3511 GC Utrecht, Netherlands
Sand is the most common material to build land in rivers, lakes, estuaries or coastal seas. However, in many areas sand is in short supply and costly. Fine sediment (mud) may be more abundantly available, and is often associated with economic costs (dredging) or negative ecological impacts (reduction in visibility). Therefore various initiatives have started to makes beneficial use of fine sediment by creating land, nature or building material. Some of these initiatives have become part of the Ecoshape 'Living Lab for mud’ initiatives.
Aim
Building with mud requires practical knowhow, but also development of the necessary scientific knowledge. The NCK symposium on Building with Mud, organised in collaboration with Ecoshape, aims to bring together people active in science and practice, and identify the main challenges – scientifically and practical – in Building with Mud. Identifying such challenges is important input for the upcoming NWO call on ‘Living Labs in the Dutch Delta’, which will also be addressed during this day.
